Leadership Coaching: How to start the process off right.

This week I begin a series of vlog posts on my interpretation and experiences on the work of Kouzes and Posner, specifically The Leadership Challenge (Wiley). I start this week by outlining how I approach my coaching process by engaging, not only the person I am going to be coaching (the coachee), but also those around them, their managers/supervisors, and their direct reports. Part of this process of engagement is to conduct either a 360-degree on-line assessment or one-on-one personal interviews. If the client wants to do the on-line assessment and there are enough people to participate, I will opt to use the LPI360 that is based on and comes from The Leadership Challenge… I invite you to watch the video to learn more about this process and how I integrate the work of Kouzes & Posner.

Epilogue: The Twenty Habits Are Not Just for Leaders

My posts over the last 21 weeks have been an exploration, my interpretations of the “Twenty Habits That Hold You Back from The Top” found in Marshall Goldsmith’s amazing book “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There”. If you are a leader, at any level, in an organization I highly recommend that you purchase this book. However, I have also realized that this book isn’t necessarily just for leaders, it can also be read through a different lens and that is what I want to talk about in this week’s vlog… watch to learn more

The Paradoxical Habit of Goal Obsession

Goal obsession is Marshall Goldsmith’s 21st habit that keep’s us from the top in his book What Got You Here Won’t Get You there. In my interpretation of this habit, I see it as a paradox, whereas we need to be planning, setting goals, but not at the expense of the here and now. There are extremes to everything and there are those people who focus so much on goals and on reaching them that they forget about the tasks at hand, or worse the people around them, even the greater mission of the organization. Marshall sees this as the underlining habit for the other 20. What do you think? Let me know in the comments below once you have watched my vlog…..

Habit #20 – An Excessive Need to Be “Me”

The excessive need to be me is exalting our faults as virtues simply because they’re who we are. Marshall Goldsmith in his book What Got You Here Won’t Get You Here calls this the “chronic behaviour, both positive and negative”. In my interpretation of this habit, I talk about how we need to know ourselves, who we are and to focus on these things we need to shift – change, to make us better. It is not just about us; it is about others and the Platinum Rule which states that we are to treat others as they want to be treated.
