Enabling Others to Act: Give others the opportunity to find their own solutions

This is not easy. As the boss you may believe it is your job, your responsibility to come up with, and then implement solutions to problems. That’s the difference between being a “boss” and being a “leader” – a “boss” commands and controls, a leader gets others involved, encourages and shares ideas, create an environment of commitment. Why is this not easy? Ego maybe? The expectations of others higher up in the organization? However, creating an environment where you enable others to act, create collaboration, getting the team involved and you act more of a coach can lead to a supercharged, productive environment. My thoughts anyway in this video….

Becoming A Great Leader, Let Others Come Up with The Solutions

Having people reporting to me, means having the opportunity to use them as a resource with ideas, and solutions they can bring to the table.  I’m not necessarily the one that must have all the ideas and solutions.  To do this I need to give people the freedom and choice in deciding how to do their work. This is the fifth behaviour that Kouzes & Posner aspire in the practice of Enabling Other to Act. How are you helping your staff as a leader to grow? Watch this week’s video for some ideas…

Are You paying Attention?

This week’s behaviour is treating others with dignity and respect. This is the third behaviour in the leadership practice of Enabling Others to Act and builds off last week’s vlog post and behaviour of actively listening to diverse points of view. As I explore in this week’s vlog, it’s not just good enough to be actually paying attention and listening to others, its about demonstrating that you are. How others are perceiving you is critical in you getting your message across, and if your head is down on a screen, you may be listening, paying attention, you might actually be taking notes of the meeting, but what is the message you are sending? Watch here to learn more…

Are You Listening to Diverse Points of View?

Think about a meeting you were recently in. it was probably an online meeting because of the pandemic, right? Were you actively listening, or were you doing something else? Distracted by your mobile maybe, or thinking of the next meeting, conversation coming up?  Did you seriously ask for input, ideas, or did you just ask because you’re supposed to ask? Were you actively listening to those ideas? What if the ideas where not in line with your thinking? Listening to diverse points of views, that is the topic of this week’s vlog and the next behaviour in the practice of Enabling Others To Act. Why is this important? Watch to find out.

Enable Others to Act: Teach them to fish

Challenge, Enable Others to Act. The Practice has two Commitments associated with it, “foster collaboration by building trust and facilitating relationships” and, “strengthen others by increasing self-determination and developing competence”.  And as we have been doing over the past several weeks, I look at the first behaviour in this practice which is, “develops cooperative relationships among people he/she works with”.

What is your definition of leadership? I am sure that we would get a lot of different responses to that question – if fact I invite you to write yours at the bottom of this post. For me leadership is like the proverb of fishing: “if you give a hungry man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” (Lao Tsu). It’s about giving others the opportunity to grow. This week’s video blog post is my thinking on the behaviour above.
